Carboxymethylcellulose sodium  (NaCMC) is also known as cellulose gum or CMC. It is a water-soluble cellulose derivative derived from natural cellulose. It is produced by chemically modifying cellulose through the introduction of carboxymethyl groups.

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is water-soluble, forming a viscous and clear solution. This property makes it useful in various applications. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose  e466 is often used as a thickening agent.
