It is produced by steam distillation from the fresh inflorescences of true lavender, a plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is a pale yellow liquid with the characteristic fragrance of fresh lavender flowers. It is readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether and ethyl acetate, and slightly soluble in water.
