Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a strongly alkaline inorganic compound that appears as a white crystalline solid at room temperature. It is easily deliquescent and releases intense heat when dissolved in water, resulting in a highly alkaline aqueous solution. In industry, it is mainly produced by electrolyzing salt water through chlor alkali method, while producing chlorine gas and hydrogen gas as by-products.
Its form includes:
Solid: flaky, granular or block shaped (purity usually ≥ 96%).
Liquid: Different concentrations of aqueous solutions (such as 30%, 50%)

1. Chemical production
Organic synthesis: producing dyes (such as indigo), drugs (such as aspirin intermediates), and plastics (such as epoxy resins).
Inorganic chemistry: preparation of sodium salts (such as sodium silicate) and metal hydroxides (such as aluminum hydroxide).
Saponification reaction: manufacturing soap and detergent, decomposing oil to produce glycerol and fatty acid salts.

2. Paper industry
Pulping: In the sulfate process, NaOH and sodium sulfide are used to steam wood chips together, dissolve lignin, and separate cellulose fibers.
Bleach: Adjust the pH value and optimize the effectiveness of bleaching agents such as chlorine and hydrogen peroxide.

3. Textile printing and dyeing
Silk treatment: cotton fibers are soaked in concentrated NaOH solution (silk solution) to enhance gloss and strength.
Defatting cleaning: Remove oil and wax from the surface of fibers to improve dyeing uniformity.

4. Water treatment
PH adjustment: Neutralize acidic wastewater (such as mine drainage and electroplating wastewater) to prevent pipeline corrosion.
Heavy metal precipitation: reacts with heavy metal ions (such as Cu ² ?, Pb ² ?) to form insoluble hydroxides, which are easy to separate.
